What is Diabetes Self Management Education (DSME)?

DSME is an educational program designed to help people with diabetes and their families gain the knowledge and skills needed to modify behavior and successfully manage the disease. The University of Texas Health Services (UTHS) diabetes program is recognized by the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE). This recognition assures that the program meets the highest standards outlined by AADE for providing education to patients with diabetes. Our registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator teaches the classes in an interactive group environment. The program covers the seven self-care behaviors that are important to focus on to live a healthy life:

  • Healthy Eating
  • Being Active
  • Monitoring
  • Taking Medication
  • Problem Solving
  • Healthy Coping
  • Reducing Risk

What can I expect?

The program consists of a series of two classes divided into two sessions. Each class lasts approximately 3 hours in length in a relaxed, engaging and interactive environment. Classes are offered at various times and locations. Saturday classes are also available. Classes on Saturday last approximately 6 hours and cover the entire program in one session. Classes provide an excellent support network where participants are encouraged to discuss their obstacles and successes. You will be given a binder which includes handouts and class information by topic for your own note taking.  

At the end of each class, the educator will ask you to complete a “SMART” goals list. Please take a moment to review this form and begin to identify areas where you believe some improvement can be made. Knowing where you want to focus will help you to develop your own personalized goals as you complete the program. 

After completing the program, patients can schedule follow-up appointments with a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator at UT Health Services to further individualize their care. 

 

How do I get started?

In order to get started in the program, we will need to obtain a referral from your provider. Simply provide us with your provider’s contact information, and we will be happy to obtain the referral on your behalf. If you do not have a provider, one of the providers at UT Health Services will meet with you and complete your referral form. You can find the Referral Form in the link at the bottom of the page.

Next, review the schedule of classes to determine which time, day and location is best for you. A proposed class schedule is available via the link at the bottom of the page. Classes are being added, so check this site regularly. Our scheduler will contact you when we receive your referral. We want to reserve your spot as soon as possible as class size is limited.
