Occupational Health Q&A

  • What is occupational health?

Practitioners in this field address the promotion of health in the work place, and the prevention and management of occupational injury, illness, and work disability. Occupational medicine focuses on the health of workers, including the ability to perform work and the health effects of working conditions:  hazards in the physical, chemical, biological, and social environment.

  • What is board certification?

Board certification is voluntary and demonstrates exceptional expertise in a specialty and/or subspecialty of medical practice for both nurse practitioners and physicians. Board certification is a peer-developed, externally validated program which serves as recognition of a dedication to a higher standard of care. Patients, physicians, health care providers, insurers, and quality organizations consider certification as the best measure of a health care provider’s knowledge, experience, and skills to provide quality health care within a given specialty.

  • What is the ACOEM?

The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) is the world’s premier professional association in this specialty with physicians as members and other highly trained professionals as associate members. Membership in the ACOEM is an expression of a health care provider’s commitment to the field. All members have agreed to adhere to ACOEM’s Code of Ethics.  The college has affiliated local, state, and regional component societies across North America as well as collegial relationships with similar societies around the globe.
